finding a place of my own

THIS WAS A CALL FOR ART BY DOUG + LAURIE ART COLLECTION TO “OFFER COLLAGISTS A CHANCE TO USE COLLAGE AS A VEHICLE TO EXPLORE WHAT IT MEANS TO SEARCH FOR ONE’S OWN PLACE, WHERE ONE FEELS AS THOUGH THEY BELONG.”

THIS SERIES OF WORK CREATED WAS MADE IN RESPONSE TO THIS CALL. THE FIRST WORK FEATURED BELOW WAS SELECTED OUT OF 300 INTERNATIONAL COLLAGE ARTISTS AS A “TOP WINNER” TO BE FEATURED AMOND 17 OTHER FINALISTS.

THE SUBMISSION PROCESS FOR #FINDINGAPLACEOFMYOWN TOOK ME ON A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY, TIME TRAVEL AND REFLECTION THROUGH ASSEMBLING CUT UP PIECES OF OLD POSTCARDS TOGETHER. STARTING WITH A BLANK, WHITE BACKGROUND I BEGAN TO PLACE CUTOUTS NEXT TO EACH OTHER, BEING ATTENTIVE TO THE RHYTHM AND STORY UNFOLDING IN FRONT OF MY EYES. WITHIN THE PROCESS, I WAS DRAWN TO THE FIGURES THAT STAYED STAGNANT IN EACH BACKGROUND AS THE POSTCARDS BEGAN TO FORM DIFFERENT NARRATIVES. THE FIGURE WITH THE BRIGHT ORANGE PANTS ON, STANDING IN THE FAR RIGHT OF THE IMAGE, IS WHO I FEEL THE MOST CONNECTED TO. THIS FIGURE IS FOCUSED ON LOOKING UPWARD AT THEIR EVER CHANGING SURROUNDINGS, FINDING A PLACE OF THEIR OWN. I FEEL AS THOUGH I BELONG WHEN I HAVE THE TIME AND SPACE TO LOOK UP, SLOW DOWN, AND BE CURIOUS IN EVERY MOMENT.
